Naosuke, a low-ranking criminal, conspires with Oiwa and her sister Sode to kill Yomoschichi, the son of Sato, to marry Sode. Iemon and Oiwa marry, but Naosuke and Sode live together.

 Iemon and Naosuke plan to poison Oiwa to marry Ume, a wealthy nobleman. Takuetsu is hired to seduce Oiwa, but she reveals his plan. Oiwa, a woman who ingested poison, kills Takuetsu and swears revenge on Iemon. Iemon kills Takuetsu and Naosuke, and they are haunted by visions of Oiwa and Takuetsu.

Iemon is married to Ume and escapes to a Buddhist temple. Naosuke confesses to his crimes and joins Yomoschichi and Sode in avenging their loved ones. Iemon is killed by Yomoschichi and Sode, and the film ends with Oiwa restored and holding her infant son in Heaven.
